Anri Sala: No Barragan, No Cry. 2002

Individuals are like the long winding arteries of a motorway. Our destinations are unknown, no matter how reliable our atlases seem to appear. As anxious as one may be to reach their destination, ‘tis an illusion of time since there will always be a significant amount of the road before and beyond their ‘final’ destination.  Unfortunately this motorway only goes in one direction. As much as you would like to veer off at the next exit to pull a U-turn, it simply cannot be done. However there will always be service stations along the way, in case you need to recharge, stretch your legs, and think about your next move.

Sometimes you will find yourself alone on your motorway, for better or for worse. Vehicles may enter and exit after just a mile or two, but some of them will stay on your journey for much longer. Some may cut you off or throw you slightly off course, but if you keep your destination in mind, you will be able to pick up where you left off. The worst outcome for a motorway is a dead end. But as long as there is still pavement ahead of you, you can always keep on going.
